BeachesHonduras is the perfect place for the avid sun-seeker. For those in quest of warm beautiful beaches with relatively easy access, the beaches near the northwestern coastal city of Puerto Cortéz in the Caribbean shore are the closest to the international airport at San Pedro Sula. Just west of there is the small town of Omoa, where without ever losing sight of the beach and the sea, visitors can enjoy a tour of a Spanish Colonial Fortress built centuries ago. For those interested in long beautiful beaches, diving, nightlife and an international party atmosphere, the Beaches on the Island of Roatan may best suit your needs. Roatan is a popular enough destination, that it has an international airport serviced by not only the Honduran carriers, but also operators of daily flights from San Pedro Sula to Roatan, and weekly flight from Houston Texas to Roatan. Utila and Guanaja also have some nicer beaches. For the traveler wishing to seek out the lesser-known beaches, off the beaten path, the small town of Ampala on the Isla el Tigre in the Golfo de Fonseca on the Pacific coast may be worth considering. This island is accessible via a ten-minute boat ride from the small fishing village of Coyolito on the mainland. Despite the modest accommodations, from the top of the extinct volcano on the island, one can see not only the Honduran mainland, but also El Salvador, and Nicaragua. |
